The article describes the biography of Mikhail Rybalkin, a 1897 graduate of Belgorod Teachers' Institute, and analyzes his contribution to the intellectual life of the Russian province. The authors provide a detailed description of his unpublished manuscripts of memoirs about Belgorod Teachers' Institute and L.N. Tolstoy which are stored in Belgorod Regional Museum of Local History. Besides, the authors discuss his letter to V.G. Chertkov which is stored in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, his teaching, educational and entrepreneurial activities on the Land of the Don Cossacks, as well as his contribution to the cooperative movement in Bashkiria.
