A folk song is seen as a special verbal and music art.
Distinctive features of the national character of Russian people are embodied in its content and genre richness. The authors discuss various hypotheses that explain the genesis of folk songs and the origin of folk on the whole.
To support the thesis that a folk song has a high "valence", the ability to self-development, the potential willingness to be "modernized" the authors give the analysis of culture classics devoted to folk music artistic creation and folklore and ethnographic material processing.
