The article is devoted to the history of the coming into being of the term &ldquo;synthesis&rdquo;, its typological characteristics, the contribution of the scientists, researchers, litterateurs, poets and writers into this issue&rsquo;s investigation. Particular attention is paid to the use of this term in art, where among the varieties of synthesis we distinguish between genre synthesis, artistic synthesis, universal synthesis, west-east synthesis and the synthesis of literary traditions. The author tries to reveal the synthesis of literary traditions.&nbsp;
