THE LAO SHE’S DRUMSINGERS: THE TRAVELLING MASTERS OF WORDS AND KEEPERS OF TRADITIONS

The article presents an analytical description of the image of Chinese storytellers creatively presented in the novel of Lao She “The Drum Singers”. The tradition of old drum-singing style is transmitted from generation to generation in China; the skill of storytellers embodied in the word, the rhythm of drums and melody of sanxian have always contributed to the spread of local Chinese cultures and affected the emotional, moral and spiritual condition of listeners. Meanwhile, the storytellers with drums in China are usually poor and disadvantaged people who are on the lowest rung of society. The craft of wanderers, drum singers with unique communication, are reminding their interlocutors or listeners about the bread and on the way to get a livelihood. According to the analysis of the novel, their open and free speech helped the storytellers to cope with everyday troubles including those which seemed to be insurmountable during the war.
