COMMUNITY AND SISTERHOOD: TOWARDS THE SEMANTICS OF SOCIAL MINISTRY OF MARTHA AND MARY CONVENT OF MERCY

The article actualizes some semantic differences of Christian community as a practically or socially opened space of merciful ministry. The author pays a particular attention to the example of communities of sisters of mercy in Russia (sisterhoods of the late XIX – early XX centuries) analyzing the gospel semantics of the ministry of sisters of mercy and its historical evolutions in Russia. A special review of a unique social project of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanova (Rev. Martyr Elizabeth Feodorovna, Alapaevskaya) allows us to distinguish general and practical meanings of nursing ministry concerning the activities of the largest Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy, to problematize the question of the fundamental conditions for the possibility of merciful ministry in modern Russia.
