Review of the book by N. A. Gromova “An Otherworldly Friend. The love story of Lev Shestov and Varvara Malakhieva-Mirovich in letters and documents” (Moscow: AST, 2021)
Although the circumstances of Lev Isaakovich Shestov's life are known to a sufficient extent, the question of how much external prerequisites could have influenced the appearance and intonation of the thinker's philosophical works remains open. A new book by the literary historian, literary critic Natalia Alexandrovna Gromova “An Otherworldly Friend. The love story of Lev Shestov and Varvara Malakhieva-Mirovich in letters and documents”, which was published in 2021 in the Moscow publishing house “AST”, as the name implies, sheds light on the relationship between the philosopher and the poet, critic, children's writer Varvara Grigorievna Malakhieva-Mirovich (1869-1954). Following the author-compiler of the book, who gives comments on diary entries and letters, the author of the proposed review tries to find the strokes connecting the personal experience of the thinker with his philosophy.
