Charity in the field of education in the Tula province at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries (background)
The article explores different forms of society's initiative in the process of development of education in the Tula province at the turn of the 19-20th centuries. The growing attention of the state and society to the problem of increasing the general level of literacy, the introduction of universal education under the conditions of sharp social stratification required the activation of charitable activities. These phenomena have been variously interpreted by Russian researchers and require additional consideration. Materials of the Fund 174 (Tula Municipal Council), State Archive of the Tula Region, and trusteeship reports make it possible to specify the situation in the province based on the analysis of such forms of charitable activity as granting scholarships for students of primary and secondary educational institutions, and other forms of material support for those in need.
