Plant ornament as a phenomenon of cultural synthesis: tradition and innovation in Russian textiles in the Silver Age
The article is devoted to the cultural and philosophical analysis of the problem of the genesis of plant ornament in the Russian textile tradition at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries as a phenomenon of cultural synthesis, which organically intertwines traditional peasant motifs with the reception of new artistic trends in Europe. The authors consider plant ornament not only as an element of decorative art, but also as an expression of deep cultural processes reflecting the interaction between national identity, aesthetic ideals and socio-economic changes. The article focuses on the fact that ornament has become a kind of ‘text’ of culture, which, on the one hand, encodes philosophical and attitudinal attitudes of the era, and on the other hand, becomes a space of dialogue between tradition and innovation. Special attention is paid to the role of ornament as a mediator between the past and the present, preserving archaic symbols and meanings in the conditions of rapid industrialization. This focus on the technical and technological context constitutes a certain novelty of the author’s approach. The authors analyze how plant motifs in textiles expressed not only aesthetic preferences but also social and cultural values, forming a unique style of Russian Art Nouveau. It is emphasized that floral ornamentation became not only an element of decoration, but also an important cultural code reflecting the philosophy of national existence and identity. It is concluded that the plant ornament in Russian textiles of the turn of the century became not only an expression of cultural identity, but also an important element of the national cultural heritage, preserving the connection with tradition in the conditions of modernization.
