The article is a review of the recently published monograph by L.B. Alaev, a prominent Russian indologist, devoted to the problem of the community in history and historiography, as well as discussions around the abstracts put forward by the researcher on the pages of the Journal "Srednie veka" ("The Middle Ages"). Describing the monograph and discussion materials, the author of the review at the same time expresses his views on the peculiarities of the community building process and its evolution in relation to the European (and Russian) Middle Ages and early Modern times.
