A New Patriotism for New People
(Interdisciplinary Orientations)

This article addresses the question of patriotism as a meaningful cognitive state, its historical foundations, and the practices of its presence in contemporary Russian public life. It clarifies the etymological auras and realistic aspects of the theological (Christian) foundations of patriotism in the context of its cognitively holistic understanding in contemporary interdisciplinary research, focused on teaching, in relation to the attitudes and goals of patriotic education of Russian youth. It is substantiated that the renewal of patriotic practices in their historical essence consists some educational integration of spiritual, or moral and legal values (the “heavenly city” and the “earthly city,” in the words of Blessed Augustine) in the vital framework of the historical traditions of the Russian “third city”,  making it possible to resolve a number of contradictions that arise in thinking that is only just getting used to objectively capturing absolute values, factually limiting the multitude of accumulated images of patriotism (their “polymentality”) with realistic practices of reflecting on their semantic unity.
