“Trends” of the German aesthetic-philosophical tradition in the epistolary dialogue of A.A. Grigoriev and N.N. Strakhov

This paper examines the correspondence between A.A. Grigoriev and N.N. Strakhov in 1860-1862 as one of the most important sources of reception and original reinterpretation of the ideas of classical German philosophy in Russian thought of the mid-19th century. Primary attention is paid to the analysis of A.A. Grigoriev’s philosophical position, which in its views made a transition from Hegel to Schelling, which contradicted the general intellectual movement of the era. The philosophy of revelation and the organic concept of art became the foundation of the “organic criticism” developed by Grigoriev. The article demonstrates that Grigoriev’s commitment to Schelling was not epigonism; on the contrary, it was the result of a conscious choice directed against the utilitarianism of the 1860s and Hegelian rationalism, and also formed the basis of a distinctive pochvennik aesthetics (ideas based on a return to folk roots).
