"Memory of the color of sadness" (towards a reconstruction of the life and works of V.Y. Eroshenko in Japan and China)
The life and work of Vasily Eroshenko, a renowned Russian cultural figure of the first half of the 20th century, are examined from the perspective of Oriental studies, focusing on his place and role in the history and culture of Eastern countries, primarily China and Japan. Paradoxically, despite being blind, Eroshenko enjoyed significantly greater freedom of movement and cultural contacts than his contemporaries and compatriots. Physical blindness and Esperanto opened his horizons to the Far East, of which Japan played the most significant role in his life. Eroshenko's legacy is examined in the context of Russian-Japanese relations and the writer's own Japanese texts. The Eroshenko phenomenon deserves academic study in general and in a specifically Japanese (and broader Eastern) context.
