The touring engagements of Fyodor Chalyapin on the stage of the S.I. Zimin opera during the 1915-1916 season: a chronology
This article attempts to reconstruct the chronology of Fеodor Chaliapin's guest performances at the S.I. Zimin Opera in the 1915-1916 season, a significant yet understudied event in early 20th-century Russian culture. The novelty of the research lies in its analysis of archival documents from the Russian National Museum of Music, press publications, and memoirs. Its aim is to systematize facts concerning the event's significance. Unlike most Chaliapin monographs, which mention these performances only fragmentarily, this article reconstructs the playbill and the public's and critics' reactions. Significant attention is paid to the artist's creative role in staging the productions. The conclusion is drawn that these performances demonstrated the Zimin Opera could successfully compete with the imperial stage and provide a worthy, professional ensemble for a world-class star.
