The cognitive modeling of an extra-linguistic situation in audiovisual translation: the potential of the denotative approach
The article is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of audiovisual translation (AVT) through the prism of cognitive linguistics. AVT is considered as a complex cognitive process integrating psychology and linguistic aspects in the context of the technological breakthrough of the 21st century. The author relies on the fundamental provisions of the cognitive paradigm about language as a tool for processing experience and conceptualizing the world. The focus is on V.N. Komissarov's denotative (situational) translation model, the possibilities of which are being rethought in the context of working with multimodal content. Unlike traditional text formats, the extra-linguistic situation is explicated by visual and sound series in AVT, which rigidly determines the translation process. The paper substantiates that the denotative approach acts as an optimal mechanism for cognitive modeling, allowing the translator to achieve equivalence in conditions of non-equivalent vocabulary and contextual determinism. The author analyzes the stages of translation as sequential mental operations: from the perception of a multimodal stimulus to the formation of semantic correspondence in the translation language. It is concluded that the application of the denotative model in AVT contributes to a deeper understanding of the mental essence of translation activity and expands the didactic possibilities of translation theory.
